Great Lakes Eglinton Company History

Great Lakes-Eglinton was formed by combining two companies, both early entries to the carbide field, under one roof in 1978. Great Lakes Gauge, located in Bridgeport Michigan was formed in 1961, and specialized in carbide plug and ring gages, but also manufactured drill bushings, punches, dies, and other special tooling and wear parts. Their work ranged in diameter from a maximum of 6 inches to a minimum of .004, (about the size of a human hair). Eglinton Inc., was formed around the same time, and was located in Ferndale Michigan, (a Detroit suburb). They specialized in the production of micro-precision miniature carbide parts and assemblies that required equipment and processing skills seldom found in most metalworking shops. Parts as small as .004 inch in diameter and others requiring finished holes equally as small were relatively common production items. The products of both companies required accuracy to tolerances of 5 millionths of an inch and fine surface finishes too less than one micro inch.

Under Core Industries leadership, these two capabilities, which overlapped in several important areas, were combined and officially became Great Lakes-Eglinton. In 1997 United Dominion purchased all of Core Industries and Great Lakes-Eglinton became a United Dominion Company. In May of 2001 SPX Corporation purchased United Dominion and Great Lakes became a member of the SPX corporate family.

Great Lakes-Eglinton is located in Mid-Michigan just south of Saginaw. It is a rural setting between Bridgeport and Frankenmuth. The modern 22,000-foot facility employs approximately 70 skilled craftsmen and has been ISO 9002 certified since 1998.
